Another Failure of Linux’s Karmic Koala
Because of Windows 7 slowness many users decide to choose Linux as a free and usable alternative. There are a lot of distributions of Linux and Ubuntu became popular among home users. Linux was preparing to launch its latest embodiment Karmic Koala.
It is possible to download it, but there are complaints. According to ubuntuforms.org more than 20 per cent of users have problems that are impossible to fix despite the fact they upgrade a previous version or make new installations.
According to Alex2399, he experienced problems with Linux, moreover it did not work properly. But despite of all that he was satisfied with the working system but he said that it was time consuming to install it.
As for Cometa2k7, it took him several hours to install the system and as a result he got an unusable OS. Later he got Xubuntu 9.10 64-bit that was installed without any problems. But still there were some configurations that had to be added.
One can find a lot of comments according to which users did not have any problem while downloading Ubuntu but there are complaints and disappointment as the following issues occur: hard and floppy disks are not recognized, the loss of data, monitors suffer from flicker and blank, speakers pop, networks can’t be detected and software is unable to start.
There is one hope that developers are on the way to correct all the problems.

And there haven’t been any problems with those installing Windows 7? iPhones not working, Few drivers for HP printers… of course there are problems what do you want? a mac? oh ya, snow leopard has issues too…
Ubuntu is extremely stable and very usable. However it takes time to get familiar with, and those switching from Windows have to accept that they will take some time and effort to work through config glitches and get productive – plug and play is close, but not reached. Secondly a new release will always take a few days to stabilise – the title of your article suggests that Koala is a failure – looks like your writer has failed to understand the nature of software development and user experience.
@Sunil Raghavan
I agree with Sunil, the title is very misleading. There are several users who did not face problems & are enjoying Karmic K.
Persons who have a flawless install / upgrade are likely not to report it as that is what we expect from Ubuntu and is not newsworthy.
Also note, there are rivals who badly hope Ubuntu fails so that they can keep milking their cash-cow OS’s.
On what basis is Karmic Kaola a failure? I upgraded my system from Jaunty to Karmic in less than 45 mins yesterday! It is working fine! I can do all the work I did before! No issues with Karmic!
i think this article is baised against linux.
I am not agree with the writer . It is true that there are some user has some problem but those are not big and they will be resolve soon. But saying Karmic Koala is a Failure is worng. It is one of the best OS i ever see (i am in the It world from past 10 years). It looks like you don’t know the working cycle of software system or somebody pays you to say that.
Linux took me 453 hours to install. Because of LInux, I lost my wife, and my faith in god.
I’ve downloaded and installed Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I timed it.
On my 4 yr old AMD, it took exactly 21min 38 seconds from the time I switched PC on.
I use an old Huawei 3G datacard and it was detected in seconds. Connected in 2 min.
A further 15 minutes for the updates.
Everything was plug n play and I was up and running. Took an additional 10 min to copy all my settings (/home folder), Firefox settings (some plugins had to be downloaded) and mail folders into Evolution Mail.
OpenOffice and all my other office applications were already installed, except for Firestarter and Adobe’s PDF reader.
Here’s another interesting thing. I booted the live version, which also connects the 3G datacard. When I got the desktop, I clicked on the install icon. While it was installing, I switched desktops and played games, surfed the internet and altered a few documents on my flash drive.
I’d like to see anyone on Windows 7 do the same.
I love Karmic Koala; it ROCKS! No installation problems and I’ve never been happier with a computer. Honestly, I fail to understand how Linux Karmic Koala is a failure.
I don’t agree with the comments here. Linux users are harsh to competitor OSes, but they are too kind to their OS of choice. I’ve been using Linux for a while and Ubuntu for years now. My upgrade to Jaunty (the previous version of Ubuntu) was just *perfect* and I don’t expect any less from the new version.
I’ve read pages and pages of complains about Karmic. We’re talking about major, show-stopping bugs here (hard drive and graphics failure). This is simply unacceptable.
Nobody would accept that coming from Windows, and we should be just as exigent with Ubuntu.
To be honest, Ubuntu 9.10 is a big improvement over the 9.04 version. With all user friendly features and functionalities, it is no doubt close if not match with Vista. However, it has a very fundamental flaw in the system, in which it couldn’t detect my wiresless card. I had follow whatever advise I could possibly get in the forum, and re-installed for more than 5 times!!..In the end, it left me with frustations!!!….I give up, will wait for the next release in April 2010.
I am amongst the 20% that had, and still have, upgrade problems. The upgrade aborted due to a broken package before reaching the “Cleaning Up” phase. I had to manually complete the upgrade by re-enabling repositories and upgrading packages. Some upgrades failed with the repositories not being ready for Karma. When done, I was left with my 19″ monitor not being able to achieve a resolution greater than 800X600. It took about 4 hours to figure out a work-around. After 3 days of problems I can only wonder about what today will bring.
I suppose that most problems will be fixed before the next release, but for now I think the word “failure” is appropriate.
All of this leads to one conclusion:
LINUX SUCKS!
Yep…Linux accounts for less than 1% of PCs worldwide as the main OS. WOW….MS is shaking in their boots!
Stick with Windows, morons.
I heared about the possibility of having issues after upgrading any system a long time ago. Any time a new Xubuntu and Mandriva comes out (I run both) I download the image and perform a fresh install without formating the home partition (I always have 3 separate patitions). As a resut I have never lost any data or had problems with the new OS.
Btw, the new 9.10 Xubuntu just flies on my computer!
I used to like Ubuntu and they have made great progress and provided a valuable service by causing the managers at Microsoft much anxiety and many sleepless nights.
Ubuntu is great but it has become slow and bloated and takes forever to get anything done.
I have recently discovered that Linux Mint is just so much better and faster than Ubuntu.
It’s based on Ubuntu but they have done some magic code stuff to it and it is awesome.
I have switched to Linux Mint because it just does everything right.
It’s quite irresponsible to report that people are having problems without any context. What kind of hardware are they using? Is the hardware functioning properly?, etc…
“According to ubuntuforms.org more than 20 per cent of users have problems that are impossible to fix despite the fact they upgrade a previous version or make new installations.”
Where specifically did you find this information? Is 20% a valid number? If so, according to what research? Also, when I try going to “ubuntuforms.org” – it’s a spam page that doesn’t seem to say anything about ubuntu at all.
@JSmith14221 That is because, as everyone knows, 99% of all people are idiots. I’ve not used a Microsoft product in years. I always have the latest & greatest and it didn’t cost a dime. I’m not sure how you define moron, but it sounds like you’ve been duped.
Hi
Download and installation was fast, previous versions could not connect to my wireless (dlink)
connection, no problem now, it also recognized vista and windows 7 on my drive and installed without
problems, vista sucks only keep it because it came pre-installed, windows 7 is better than vista and I shall keep it for my games and skype, KARMIC KOALA for all my web and office needs, its fast, crisp and connects wirelessly to my printer something the other ones cannot do. So to those who say
KARMIC KOALE is no good, try installing it on a computor and not on whatever tin box you use.
There will always be a minor or major issue coming up after a stable release and most of them are fixed later. I urge Ubuntu developers to come up with bug-fixed updated CD like 9.10.1 similar to it’s long term release. This must be 2 month release. Now as ubuntu has matured enough, it would be wise to release newer version every year rather than 6 months, for better stability and compatibility.
i really love ubuntu karmic.it’s sooooooooooooooooooooo much better than windows 7. i’ve n’t used windows 7 since last month though i dual boot my system with win 7 and ubuntu 9.10!
The issue here is about Upgrade from the previous release!!!! THE ARTICLE IS WRONG!!!!
iF YOU MAKE A CLEAN INSTALL IS FINE!!!
STOP THE LIES!!!
Nope, It’s not true.
I had clean install on my laptop, wireless doesn’t work.
The fundamental problem here is not whether it’s clean install or upgrade, it has to have the most basic capability, it has to be able to detect some of the hardware.
Well while I don’t quite agree with the article but tbh the installer itself crashed on me for no good reason and kept throwing the infamous Err#5.However I’d like to add just one thing that dropping Pidgin for Empathy was a bad idea. And as far as the article goes then I’d like say one thing that the world doesn’t end on Ubuntu, there are other distros out there which are almost as good as Ubuntu if not better than it,.e.g., openSUSE 11.2(due this month), Fedora 12 Constantine(due this month), Mandriva 2010(released few days back) and several other not so popular ones like PCLinuxOS, Mepis, Zenwalk, Parsix, Pardus, Sabayon etc. Remember if you don’t like a distro or having probs with it you can always switch to another or build one for yourself(thanks to LFS). Meanwhile you can always explore more advanced distros like Slackware, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, Sourcemage or some BSD variant whatever suits you. In the end it’s all about freedom in the land of Penguins, so choose wisely or go with your heart.
