November 11th, 2009 Dharmendra Kumar No comments

Stem-cells-can-treat-blood-cancers-Chennai: Japanese stem cell scientist Yukio Nakamura has claimed that stem cell developed in laboratories could help in treating some types of blood cancer in the near future.

Nakamura, who is the head of Bio Resources Centre, Riken Institute, Japan told, “The technology, developed by Japanese scientists, does not involve usage of embryonic stem cells and therefore, is devoid of ethical conflicts.”

Nakamura was in Chennai recently to participate in an international stem cell meet, organised by the Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM), a Indo-Japan joint venture institute.

Blood cancers such as aplastic anaemia (a deficiency of red blood cells) and thalassemia (an inherited form of anaemia caused by faulty synthesis of haemoglobin) can be treated by the stem cell technology.

Yoga reduces chronic back pain!

November 7th, 2009 Dharmendra Kumar No comments

New Delhi: In a new study it’s being said that Yoga may be more effective than standard treatment in reducing chronic low back pain.

The study says further that individuals from low-income, minority backgrounds with chronic low back pain (CLBP) may be more affected due to disparities in access to treatment.

Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Boston Medical Center recruited adults with CLBP from two community health centers that serve racially diverse, low-income neighbourhoods of Boston.

They were randomly assigned to either a standardized 12-week series of hatha yoga classes or standard treatment including doctor’s visits and medications.

As part of the trial, the researchers asked participants to report their average pain intensity for the previous week, how their function is limited due to back pain, and how much pain medication they are taking.

Tea is good for heart and brain?

November 7th, 2009 Dharmendra Kumar No comments

New Delhi: Till now people said that taking a lot of tea may not be good for health, but now experts say that if you take 8 cups of tea daily, your heart and brain may be healthy.

Though, previous studies have already linked the drink’s healthy antioxidant properties and high flavonoid content to preventing heart disease and cutting the risk of some cancers.

Independent dietician Dr Carrie Ruxton’s research on caffeine at King’s College, London, saw her review 47 published studies to reach the conclusion that caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and cocoa have positive effects on mental function.

Ruxton has supported earlier reports by claiming that an optimal intake of 400mg of caffeine a day leads to “key benefits in terms of mental function and heart health”.

She assessed three studies, accounting for almost 90,000 patients, to find that drinking four cups of tea or coffee a day reduced chances of cardiovascular disease.
