City Shopping Centre, a famous 3 storey departmental store in Faridabad came drashing down within seconds leaving 6 people dead and 3 injured.

A rear exit in the store was the survivor route for 60 people who were inside the store when the store collapsed.

It is believed that the store owner was carrying on illegal construction on the top floor of this 25 year old building. There was a heavy generator installed on the rooftop which may have been one of the reasons for the crash.

The collapse took place somewhere around 11.45am and the rescue operation was winded up by late evening. 3 people who were trapped in the debris were rescued.

Sources reported that there were about 35 staff employees, 15-20 shoppers and more than 12 construction workers in the complex when the incident occurred. 6 people who are dead are all construction workers who were working on the top floor.
The store usually has more crowd in evenings and had the collapse occurred in evenings, the toll would have been much higher. Anil Khatri, cousin of one of the survivors said, “It’s the most popular shop in the area where you get everything under one roof. There’s a heavy rush of customers during evening hours.”

Jugal Kishore one of the security guards of the store said, “There was a power cut and as soon as the employees started the generator, the roof came crashing down. Since the crash was towards the main road, most of us trapped inside could come out using the rear exit. Had the exit not been there, the toll would have been high.”

Though, the exact reason of the collapse has not been known yet.
