Intel’s Plans For India
Intel negotiates with such leading Indian companies as Tata Communications, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications that may bid for broadband wireless access spectrum that will be on the auction in January 2010.
At present the companies discuss Intel’s offer of Worldwide Interoperability for WiMAX technology and the chance of getting a minority interest in return for venture capital.
The issue has not been solved yet, although the majority of experts regard WiMAX technology as belonging to fourth generation services, which provide higher speeds than 3G. However, it is said to be not enough mobile.
While in Sweden and Bangladesh, for instance, Intel has bid for spectrum to provide WiMAX services, in India the model will include partnerships with local telecom leaders.
In addition, Intel has an intention on using a consortium approach in India to roll out WiMAX-based broadband services.
At the present time there are only about 6.5 million broadband users. This figure is much lower than the expected 20 million by 2010. Now 80 per cent of the service is provided through digital subscriber line technology, 8 per cent through cable and just 1 per cent through wireless.
About 28 companies including such leaders as Intel Technology India, Alacatel-Lucent India, Motorola India, Moser Baer Industrial Infrastructure, Huawei, HCL Infosystems, Larsen & Toubro Infotech and TCIL were observed to acquire the tender documents.
