Microsoft Windows 7: Piracy VS License
It was estimated that almost 50,000 pirated DVDs of Microsoft Windows 7 were sold since it was launched officially on October 22.
The cause of the pirated versions was the cost Rs 40-Rs 250. As for the cost of legal new operating system launched by Microsoft Corp, it was between $150-$300 (Rs 7,500-Rs15,000) in the international markets. But the company decided to make the prices lower, i.e. 20 percent below international rates in India. It is possible to purchase the new operating system between Rs 6,000-Rs 11,000.
But regardless the discount made by the company, many customers still obtain the pirated version.
Also it was noted that many computer service providers used pirated software as they were not so expensive, for that reason there was no need to buy licensed softwares. Pirated operating systems included cheap pirated anti-virus software that was available for free and this should be considered to be another reason to purchase such systems.
But still there are anti-virus softwares such as Awast that can be downloaded from the Internet and, moreover, there were considered to be efficient.
According to AK Pathak, police spokesperson, the police was helpless concerning struggling against piracy. Only due to a formal complaint it would be possible to act.
