The programme is based on BBC’s international format Baby Borrowers which was a success in the US, UK and Europe, has celebrity couples taking care of babies.

The ministry notice said the channel was using children as “commodities”. It added that the programme appeared to “denigrate children” and could have a negative impact on young viewers.

The ministry’s move came after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) reacted to complaints from concerned viewers and NGOs and urged I&B ministry to take action.

The commission has asked the channel to stop broadcasting the programme as it is violating child rights and labour laws.

NDTV Imagine claims that the children’s parents were present throughout the shoot and supervised the proceedings from TV cameras in adjacent rooms.

They were also free to intervene if they perceived the slightest risk to their child. BBC also had experienced nurses and doctors on call 24×7 for any emergency.

Host India prefers Julia Roberts over Angelina Jolie

September 29th, 2009 Sanjeev Verma No comments

Mumbai: When it comes to hosting, India seems to prefer Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman) over Angelina Jolie (Changeling)—both Oscar winners.

Roberts is currently shooting in rural Haryana (India) for “Eat, Pray, Love” (Ryan Murphy), while Jolie was in Pune-Mumbai (India) in 2006 for filming “A Mighty Heart” (Michael Winterbottom).

Even when comparing with Bollywood actresses like megastar Filmfare Award winner Aishwarya Rai (Devdas), Roberts appears to be comparatively scoring higher points, reports suggest.

Roberts seems to have won all she interacted with in India—villagers, media persons following her, and the Indian crew members.

Qualities reportedly appreciated in Roberts include simplicity, humility, relaxed appearance, accessibility, professionalism, down-to-earth style, drinking chai (Indian tea) and street-walking with natives, eating with all the crew (while Jolie reportedly ate only with American or non-Indian crew), sticks to schedule, throws no tantrums or airs, does her homework thoroughly before shooting day, moved around barefoot, preferred walking over riding car to small distances, etc.

European governments pressured the Swiss to release Polanski, 76, who has French and Polish citizenship.

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner called the apprehension a “bit sinister. A man of such talent, recognized in the entire world …all this just isn’t nice.”

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand told, “In the same way that there is a generous America that we like, there is also a scary America that has just shown its face.”

Polanski gets favor from French politician

Frederic Mitterand has said he is “dumbfounded” by the arrest. Mr Mitterand added that President Nicolas Sarkozy was following the case “with great attention”.

US prosecutors want Mr Polanski to return to be sentenced for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

A lawyer acting for Mr Polanski said he will challenge his arrest and any attempts to extradite him to the US.

He pleaded guilty at the time as part of a plea bargain but then fled abroad.

In recent years, Mr Polanski, 76, asked a US appeals court in California to overturn a judges’ refusal to throw out his case. He claimed misconduct by the judge, now deceased, who had arranged a plea bargain and then reneged on it.
